Parallax recommends Simon Monk’s “Programming the BBC micro:bit Getting Started with MicroPython” book as an expansion companion to our Python educational tutorials written for the cyber:bot.
Parallax tutorials teach enough Python to effectively use the cyber:bot, but with this book an educator or hobbyist may efficiently expand their Python abilities with lists and dictionaries, writing their own modules and classes, and more advanced uses of functions. These programming concepts are useful and for advanced applications like maze solving, cyber:bot to cyber:bot radio communication, and integration of the micro:bit module’s on-board compass and accelerometer sensors for robot navigation.
Simon’s book is also a great companion for discovering the micro:bit module’s hardware on its own, even without a cyber:bot. It’s written with a conversational style and progressive examples that you can load and run, using the built-in hardware. Most of the book is about Python, but an educator looking to bridge block programming from younger levels will find the last few chapters very helpful, too.
